Former City Councilmember Sherri Lightner has endorsed La Jolla community planning volunteer Joe LaCava for the council district she once represented.

“Joe is a strong community advocate who understands how to get things done at City Hall. He has the integrity, technical background, relevant experience and knowledge of local issues needed to hit the ground running on day 1,” Lightner said.

Lightner served two four-year terms on the council between 2008 and 2016. She said she worked closely with LaCava on both neighborhood and city-wide issues during that period.

“I am grateful to have Sherri Lightner’s support. She was a successful councilmember for the communities of District 1, especially for environmental protection and increased public safety,” said LaCava, a former civil engineer who became a community activist.

District 1, which is currently represented by mayoral candidate Barbara Bry, includes La Jolla, University City, Carmel Valley and adjacent areas. LaCava briefly ran against Bry in 2016, but dropped out of the race before the primary.

Other candidates for the seat in the March 2020 primary include firefighter Aaron Brennan, attorney Will Moore and architect Louis Rodolico.
