The race is officially non-partisan, but Ellis is a Republican and both Bry and LaCava are Democrats.
LaCava, the former head of the La Jolla Community Planning Group, said said he was concerned that he and Bry would split the Democratic vote. “Now the Democrats can concentrate on one candidate,” he told KPBS.
District 1 includes Carmel Valley, La Jolla and University City and is historically the linchpin over whether Democrats or Republicans control the City Council.
