The primary is still six months away, but the District 1 City Council race has narrowed with community planning expert Joe LaCava exiting the contest.

The remaining candidates are high tech entrepreneur Barbara Bry and businessman and civic leader Ray Ellis. Council member Sherri Lightner is being termed-out after eight years.

The race is officially non-partisan, but Ellis is a Republican and both Bry and LaCava are Democrats.

LaCava, the former head of the La Jolla Community Planning Group, said said he was concerned that he and Bry would split the Democratic vote. “Now the Democrats can concentrate on one candidate,” he told KPBS.

District 1 includes Carmel Valley, La Jolla and University City and is historically the linchpin over whether Democrats or Republicans control the City Council.
