Thousands of costumed runners will jumpstart Super Bowl Sunday morning with a cruise along Coast Highway 101 for the annual Cardiff Kook Run.

This year’s 10K and 5K race will start at 7 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 7. The Cardiff tradition brings together thousands for a fun run and costumed race along the Pacific Coast. The course starts under the world famous “Encinitas” sign, passes by the famous “Cardiff Kook” statue, rises above some of the most popular surf breaks in the world and heads down to Cardiff State Beach.

Each year, the run donates a portion of proceeds to selected charities each year and continuing the effort of preserving and enhancing the “Cardiff Kook” plaza in beautiful Cardiff-by-the Sea, Calif.

U.S. Track and Field has certified the CKR 10K and 5K courses. This year’s group of “Elite Runners” is the strongest group in its 5-year history. Runners are expected to break the course record in both men’s and women’s divisions. Prize money of $8,200 will be split among the top six finishers in each division.

Registration is $44 for the 5K (3.1 miles), $49 for the Kook K (4 miles), and $54 for the 10K (6.2 miles). It is $35 to join a 2016 Cardiff Kook Run Team. Each participant receives a cotton T-shirt and finisher’s medal.

The 2016 Elite Race will pay $8,200 to male and female finishers as follows: 1st = $2,000, 2nd = $1,000, 3rd = $750, 4th = $400, 5th = $300 and 6th = 200. A $250 bonus will also be awarded to any runner setting the new course record. All winning times will be engraved in perpetuity on the CKR Trophy.
