John B. Scherling was sworn in Thursday as San Diego’s newest Superior Court judge, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Carol Isackson.

Gov. Jerry Brown on Dec. 23 announced Scherling’s appointment to the judgeship, which pays $189,041. He’s neither Republican nor Democrat, registered without party preference.
 
Scherling, 56, was a partner at Sughrue Mion from 2008 to 2015, where he was of counsel from 2005 to 2008, according to a court news release.

He was of counsel at Hahn and Adema from 2005 to 2007 and served as an assistant U.S. attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of California, from 1990 to 2005.

Scherling also was an associate at Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher from 1986 to 1990.

He earned his juris doctor degree from Vanderbilt University Law School and holds a bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University.
