Fanning out around town this weekend, there’s a particularly wide array of things to do. But we’ll start this roundup with what promises to be one of the single biggest concerts of the year downtown.
Friday, May 15
Curebound “Concert for Cures” featuring P!NK: As Times of San Diego reported in February, the multiple Grammy-winner and pop titan will take the stage at Petco Park for the annual fundraising event for the local advocacy group, which has vowed to invest $100 million into cancer research. Last year’s event, featuring Elton John, raised $11.5 million. The show kicks off at 8 p.m.
“Dancing Afuera” in Vista: The Vista Academy of Visual & Performing Arts (600 N Santa Fe Ave.) hosts this showcase for youth dance teams, with local businesses joining in with booths at the event. There’s no cost to attend the event, which is a fundraiser for the academy’s dance program. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the event kicks off at 6 p.m.
GamerCon: Whatever your style of game – tabletop, role-playing, console, or old-school arcade cabinet – the Tenth Avenue Arts Center downtown (930 10th Ave.) will have something that fits your fancy. If you and your friends are feeling particularly adventurous, you can enter the ARTEMIS Bridge Simulator and set off to explore strange new worlds … so to speak. The convention starts at 5 p.m. on Friday and runs through Sunday, with weekend passes available for $35 and one-day passes for sale as well.
San Diego Cheese & Libation Expo: BRICK in Liberty Station (2863 Historic Decatur Road) will play host to what organizers call “champion cheeses and bottomless beverages” over the weekend, with all sorts of cheese, wine and cocktail treats available at this festival, beginning with the “Maker’s Night” trade show event at 5 p.m. on Friday.
San Diego Fringe Festival: This celebration of “the beautiful, the bizarre and the unexpected” enters the first weekend of its 11-day run encompassing no less than 63 shows in venues stretching from San Diego County across the border into Mexicali. There’s no charge to see some of the performances, but you do have package deal options for ticketed shows.
Saturday, May 16
Asian Pacific Cultural Festival of San Diego: The Asian Culture & Media Alliance (ACMA) presents a truly multicultural event at the House of Pacific Relations in Balboa Park (2191 Pan American W. Road), with performances reflecting the traditions of a dozen countries from around the continent, on top of food and artisan vendors and what organizers call “interactive cultural experiences.” The event is free to attend and starts at 11 a.m.
“Goldenpalooza” lights up Golden Hill: Just east of Downtown, the Golden Hill TK-8 Dual Language Immersion School (1240 33rd St.) will feature musical and dance performances on two stages along with arts workshops, athletic drills and a food court from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no cost to attend.
MiGente Block Party in City Heights: The activist group will host its first party event of the summer at Teralta Park (4100 Central Ave.) from noon to 5 p.m., celebrating “community, culture, and creativity” and providing a spotlight to underrepresented artists. Admission is pay-what-you-can, though organizers suggest donating anywhere from $5 to $10. The event will return on June 13, July 11 and Aug. 15.
San Diego Vintage Crawl: The inaugural edition of Vintage Store Day last year saw more than 900 independent stores in 46 states take part. This time around Tanya McAnear, who owns Bad Madge & Co. in South Park (2205 Fern St.), is teaming up with 12 other local retailers to offer special promotions and events for shoppers seeking something with that perfect old-timey touch.

Sunday, May 17
“Luisa Fernanda: Zarzuela at the Villa”: This show isn’t a regular musical production; this is a Zarsuela, a genre with roots in Spain dating back to the 19th century. First written in 1932, the drama centers on a love triangle unfolding “as Spain is torn between monarchy and revolution.” The show, with performances Sunday at 3 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m., is being presented by Cinballera Entertainment and it has some personal meaning for the company’s founders, Tiffany and Rebekah Brannan, as it was their first foray into performing opera. They’ll bring this work to Villa Montezuma Museum (1925 K St.); tickets cost $35.
Scientist Of The Year Celebration in La Jolla: The San Diego chapter of the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists foundation (ARCS for short) will honor Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israel of UC San Diego’s School of Medicine for its 39th annual fundraising event. “Her work has significantly advanced our understanding of sleep disorders, aging, and cancer, with meaningful improvements in patient care,” ARCS said of Ancoli-Israel. The event starts at 4 p.m. at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center (7600 Fay Ave.) in La Jolla.
