A driver fled the scene after hitting a woman as she tried to climb into into her van in Southcrest Sunday.

Witnesses told San Diego police they saw a light-colored GMC Yukon with silver rims strike her just before noon as the driver traveled southbound on 36th Street.

The impact sent her toppling to the ground as the driver slowed, but left the scene. Relatives rushed to help the victim.

Another witness followed the suspect to the Navy Exchange on 32nd Street. Officers contacted military authorities, who sought the driver.

Paramedics tended to the victim and transported her to UC San Diego Medical Center. Her condition is unknown.

Officers blocked 36th Street as the victim received treatment.
