A collision between a bicyclist and motorcyclist early Friday morning sent both to the hospital and closed a major intersection in Ocean Beach during the morning commute, police said.
The crash, which seriously injured the 45-year-old bicyclist, happened just after 3:50 a.m. at Sunset Cliffs and Nimitz boulevards, slightly west of where westbound Interstate 8 ends and eastbound Interstate 8 begins, San Diego Police Officer Steve Bourasa said.
“The bicyclist was traveling from the west to the east … crossing Nimitz Boulevard … when he was struck by the motorcyclist,” Sgt. Robert Hawkins said.
The 45-year-old bicyclist was taken to a hospital for treatment of a broken nose, broken jaw and cuts to his face, Hawkins said. His injuries were considered serious, but not life-threatening.
The 51-year-old motorcyclist also was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were considered minor, Hawkins said.
Police kept the intersection completely shut down past at least 7:15 a.m. while doctors determined if either of the victims was seriously injured, as crashes involving serious injuries require more detailed investigations.
As of 8:45 a.m., one lane in the area remained blocked, but there was at least one lane open in all directions, SDPD public affairs Officer Joshua Hodge said.
The department’s traffic division is handling the investigation.
