Winger Alex Mighten, just acquired by San Diego FC, will be loaned to FC Nordsjælland from the Danish Superliga for the remainder of 2024.

San Diego announced the signing of Mighten, who comes from English Premier League side Nottingham Forest, on Friday. The winger, who comes from Nashville SC in exchange for $50,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money, has a pact with San Diego through the end of the 2026 MLS season with an option for an additional year.

Mighten will join SDFC in January, ahead of the expansion club’s first season, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate.

“Alex is an exciting addition to San Diego FC, bringing the energy and creativity we seek in our attacking players,” Sporting Director Tyler Heaps said in a news release. “He has unique and special qualities with his ability to unbalance defenders and we are excited to see what he can contribute and bring to MLS.”

The Hartford, Conn. native made over 67 appearances across all competitions for Nottingham Forest, tallying four goals and one assist. The English-American dual citizen, born in the U.S., has represented England at the youth international level throughout his career.

“I’m excited to be joining San Diego FC at such an exciting time for the club,” Mighten said. “The opportunity to develop further at SDFC and MLS is a perfect scenario for my growth as a player. I can’t wait to contribute to the club’s success and help build something special in San Diego.”

Mighten joined the Nottingham Forest Academy in 2009 from Arnold Town and made his professional debut in a Carabao Cup match against Arsenal in September 2019 at the age of 17.

Months later, he recorded his first start for Nottingham in January 2020 in a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea during an FA Cup match. He scored his first professional goal in a 1-1 draw at Millwall in December 2020 and was later recognized as the supporters’ Young Player of the Season during the 2020-21 campaign.

Mighten went on to make his Premier League debut in August 2022 against Newcastle United.

Mighten joined League One side Sheffield Wednesday on loan for the first half of the 2022-23 season, recording 14 appearances and scoring two goals for the English Championship club.

He spent the first half of the 2023–24 season on loan at KV Kortrijk of the Belgian First Division where he made 12 appearances in all competitions during a four-month stay in Belgium before being recalled by Forest in January. Mighten was then loaned to League One side Port Vale Football Club for the remainder of the 2023-24 season where he appeared in 10 games.

At the international level, Mighten first represented England at the U-15 level, then at the U-16, U- 17, U-18 and U-20 levels. Given his dual citizenship, Mighten is eligible to represent the U.S. at the senior national team level.

Mighten was born in Connecticut while his father, Eddie Mighten, worked for ESPN. His family returned to Nottingham, England when he was three years old.

He represents the sixth player signing in SDFC club history, alongside goalkeeper Duran Ferree, forward Marcus Ingvartsen, midfielder Jeppe Tverskov, winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano and defender Paddy McNair.
