San Diego State women’s soccer played in a road exhibition match Thursday against the University of San Diego, prepping the Aztecs for a season of high expectations.
The Aztecs were picked to finish first for the second straight year by the Mountain West’s 12 women’s soccer head coaches. SDSU has been predicted to finish in the top two of the preseason poll in 14 of the last 15 years.
SDSU leads the conference with seven regular-season and five tournament titles.
SDSU returns ten of its 11 starters and six of seven All-Mountain-West players from last season’s championship team. Midfielder Denish Castro, who is on the MW Watch List, led the team with 10 goals and six assists last season.
Forward Emma Gaines-Ramos and defender Grace Goins join Castro on the watch list.
SDSU women’s soccer kicks off their regular season on Aug. 15 with a home game against Cal State Bakersfield.
