Padres Pedal the Cause shifts to a virtual format Saturday, asking participants to take “the 100% challenge.”

Since every dollar from the fundraiser goes directly to local cancer research –i.e. 100% – organizers are encouraging supporters to focus on the 100 figure – doing 100 reps of a particular activity for instance, or spending 100 minutes, say, biking, spinning, running or walking.

Participants can register for $49 and honor survivors, fighters, or loved ones lost to cancer, while committing to a fundraising goal of at least $100. More than 1,500 people have signed up so far this year, with $1.07 million committed to the cause.

Once registered, participants create an online fundraising profile and receive a mailed package with an event t-shirt and other items.

Padres Pedal the Cause supports the search for cures for cancer by funding collaborative research and trials at the region’s top cancer research and treatment centers.

Since 2013, Padres Pedal the cause has raised $13.23 million and issued 71 grants to local researchers, including the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health and the Salk Institute. The grants also funded six clinical trials.

The Padres became a fundraising partner with the group five years ago.
