The San Diego State women’s basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West preseason poll,
the highest the Aztecs have been ranked since 2013, when SDSU was slotted in third.

The team kicks off the 2019-20 season at the University of Hawai’i at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

SDSU finished with 14 wins last season, the most under head coach Stacie Terry, and made a run to the Mountain West Tournament semi-finals.

The Aztecs return four starters from last year, led by the sophomore duo of Sophia Ramos and Mallory Adams. Both made the Mountain West All-Freshman Team a year ago

The Aztecs return players who accounted for 74% of their scoring last season and 81 percent of their rebounds. SDSU lost just one starter.

In addition, the Aztecs have three newcomers. Freshmen Isabela Hernandez and Talia Sireni and Oregon State transfer Taytor Kalmer, a redshirt last year.

Kalmer, a 5’8″ guard, helped the Beavers reach three consecutive NCAA tournaments, including the 2016 Final Four.

Reigning champ Boise State was picked to win the conference, picking up 25 of 29 first-place votes.

New Mexico is expected to finish second, followed by Fresno State and Wyoming.

Following SDSU were Colorado State, UNLV, Utah State, Nevada, Air Force and San Jose State.

Boise State’s Brayden Hodgins was selected as the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year. Joining her on the All-MW preseason team: teammate Riley Lupfer, New Mexico’s Aisia Roberstson and Jayla Everett, and Fresno State’s Maddi Utti.
