A brush fire has burned hundreds of acres at Camp Pendleton, prompting evacuations of two golf courses and warnings for residents.

The blaze broke out shortly after 10 a.m. near Marine Memorial Golf Course, which was evacuated. Oceanside police also said the city’s municipal golf course has been evacuated.

Flames from the November Fire are spreading south toward Oceanside, leading to evacuation warnings in some parts of the city nearest the Marine base. A temporary evacuation center has been set up at El Camino High School, 400 Rancho Del Oro Drive.

The warnings apply to residents in zones SDC-0429, SDC-0317 and SDC 0372. The areas are directly south of the base, bounded roughly by state route 76 on the southwest and, extending east, between Douglas Drive and Vandegrift Boulevard.

The fire had grown to 150 acres, per CalFire, but then leaped to 800 acres, while burning at a “dangerous rate of spread,” according to reports on the Watch Duty app. Air tankers have been requested to support firefighters.

Base officials declared the fire an “extended attack fire,” meaning it’s “going to take awhile” to gain control over the flames.

Smoke may be seen, but there was no fire threat to parts of the North County Fire Protection District, officials said in a social media post shortly before 10:30 a.m.

According to the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, communities outside Camp Pendleton affected by the smoke include Oceanside, Bonsall and Fallbrook.
