Defenseman Brandon Montour scored two minutes, 46 seconds into overtime as the San Diego Gulls extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 4-3 victory over the Ontario Reign Friday in Ontario.
The Gulls tied the score for the third time in the game on Kevin Roy’s goal with 1:43 left in regulation. The Gulls were skating with a sixth attacker after coach Dallas Eakins pulled goaltender Jhonas Enroth.
Enroth stopped 26 of 29 shots, including all three he faced in overtime, to win for the sixth time in his six games with the Gulls, the Anaheim Ducks American Hockey League affiliate.
Enroth also had an assist on the winning goal, his first point since he was credited with an assist when he was playing with the AHL’s Portland Pirates in the 2011 Calder Cup playoffs.
The Gulls (22-12-2-2) have 10 victories and a shootout loss during the streak. The streak is the longest this season in the AHL.
The Pacific Division-leading Reign (23-9-8-0) took a 3-2 lead on Justin Auger’s power-play goal with 10:49 remaining in regulation.
Ontario opened the scoring 46 seconds into the game on T.J. Hensick’s goal.
The Gulls tied the score on Jordan Samuels-Thomas goal 6:25 into the first period.
The Reign regained the lead on Mike Amadio’s goal 1:46 into the second period. Nic Kerdiles re-tied the score 3:35 into the third period for his first goal in his two games with the Gulls this season.
Jack Campbell stopped 26 of 30 shots for Ontario, the Los Angeles Kings AHL affiliate, before a crowd at Citizens Business Bank Arena announced at 9,491.
The Gulls were scoreless on both their power-play opportunities and killed two of the Reign’s three.
The teams will meet again Saturday at Valley View Casino Center on Pink in the Rink Night, supporting women’s health.
The Gulls will wear commemorative pink jerseys that will be available through live and silent auctions during and after the game. Proceeds will benefit charities supporting women’s health.
