The effort to secure the 2017 America’s Cup for San Diego gained momentum Tuesday.
That’s when the San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution backing the Port of San Diego’s bid to host the America’s Cup in San Diego Bay.
San Diego and Bermuda are the two finalists for the 35th America’s Cup. The yacht championship was held in San Francisco Bay last summer.
San Diego hosted the event in 1988, 1992 and 1995, but those regattas were held at sea off Point Loma. This time, the yacht races would be held in the bay to make the America’s Cup more spectator-friendly.
“I just think this is a win-win,” Supervisor Dave Roberts said. “We don’t have to build any stadium – we don’t have to build anything, and the economic impact to our region would be tremendous.”
The America’s Cup would further enhance a series of improvements that have taken place along the city’s waterfront recently, including the park at the County Administration Center and renovations of the Embarcadero, Supervisor Greg Cox said.
The San Diego City Council is scheduled to consider a similar resolution at a special meeting Thursday.
