A political action committee reported Thursday it has raised $800,000 over three weeks to support Mayor Todd Gloria’s campaign for re-election.

San Diegans for Fairness said $500,000 has already been allocated to television advertising “to ensure that the PAC’s positive message about Gloria’s leadership and accomplishments continues to reach voters citywide.”

Philanthropist and civic activist Stephen Cushman, chairman of the PAC, said the Mayor “has demonstrated time and time again that he is the right leader for San Diego.”

“From tackling the housing crisis to revitalizing infrastructure and supporting small businesses, Mayor Gloria has delivered real results for our City,” said Cushman. “This campaign is about continuing that progress, and our supporters are rallying behind Todd because they know what’s at stake.”

As an example of Gloria’s leadership, Cushman cited an 82% reduction in homeless encampments downtown after passage of the Unsafe Camping Ordinance.

Cushman has been one of the community leaders involved in the effort to open a 1,000-bed homeless shelter in Middletown across from the airport.

The announcement comes just weeks after the conservative Lincoln Club reported a $1 million donation to support Gloria’s opponent Larry Turner as well as Republican candidates for other offices.

Jared Sclar, a spokesman for the PAC, said the donation to the Lincoln Club had spurred a “broad coalition of business and labor leaders” to step up and “support a Mayor who consistently delivers on his promises.”
