The conservative Lincoln Club of San Diego County has received a surprise $1 million donation to support local Republican candidates and business-friendly ballot measures in the November election.

The gift from Point Loma attorney Steven Richter was first reported by Voice of San Diego, and later confirmed by Mayor Todd Gloria, who is facing an unexpected challenge from police officer Larry Turner.

“We’ve been following a rumor now for a few weeks, and unfortunately, we can confirm it’s true: The far-right is coming for me, and they’re going to spend a million dollars to do it,” said Gloria in an email message to supporters.

“These are the same people who brag about meeting with JD Vance. They want a future where Donald Trump is our president,” Gloria said.

The Lincoln Club ‘s political action committee has endorsed Turner, as well as many Republican candidates and taken business-friendly positions on ballot issues

While there was immediate speculation about the impact on the mayoral race, the chairman of the Lincoln Club PAC, developer Mike Turk, told Axios San Diego the money would go to “the club’s priorities.”

The organization describes its members as “business, economic and political leaders who engage with elected officials and support impactful campaigns.”
