Mayor Todd Gloria and City Councilman Joe LaCava issued a joint statement Friday slamming “criminal vandalism” of traffic separators installed along Diamond Street to calm traffic in Pacific Beach.

Flexible posts installed at intersections of Fanuel and Cass streets earlier this week were torn apart and stolen overnight Thursday.

“The Diamond Street traffic-calming project was part of a years-long community process, and destruction of the traffic control installation is nothing less than undermining that open process and an affront to the community,” Gloria and and LaCava said.

“We will not tolerate criminal acts of theft and vandalism anywhere in our city, and our police department has opened an investigation in order to hold those who committed this crime accountable,” the two said.

The city has already re-installed the flexible posts. In addition to investigating the incident, police will increase their presence at the location.

The posts prevent drivers from turning left off Diamond at Fanuel and Cass streets and has drawn criticism from some residents.
