A suspect was shot and arrested by sheriff’s deputies in Bonsall Saturday, causing state Route 76 to be temporarily shut down in both directions, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of Mission Road and Via Montellano, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities had received multiple reports of a man in the area brandishing a “Glock-style” handgun and knife, San Diego police said.

The first two patrol deputies to arrive made contact with the suspect, ordering him to drop the weapons as they waited for backup to arrive.  When he refused to do so, they both fired at him multiple times, striking him in his legs and lower body.

The suspect, now incapacitated, dropped the weapons he was holding, police said.

Investigators identified the suspect as Patrick Wendell Lowell, 66, of Escondido. He is being treated at a local hospital for injuries described as non-life threatening.

Lowell was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and an outstanding felony warrant. The weapons he allegedly brandished were recovered at the scene.

The deputies, whose names were not released by police, escaped without injury. They have been employed by the Sheriff’s department for three and five years, respectively.  Both are currently assigned to the Vista station.

The highway was temporarily closed between Camino Del Rey and East Vista Way during the investigation, which in accordance with a countywide agreement governing shootings by local law enforcement, is being conducted by the San Diego Police Department’s homicide unit.
