A new poll shows Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar with a wide lead over incumbent Rep. Duncan Hunter and a cluster of other Republicans in the race for the 50th Congressional District in East County.

The poll by SurveyUSA for 10News and the San Diego Union-Tribune interviewed 770 voting-age individuals between Sep. 27 and Oct. 2. Results were released on Wednesday.

Among those polled who said they were likely to vote in the March 3 primary, 31% favored Campa-Najjar, 20% former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio, 16% former Rep. Darrell Issa, 11% Hunter and 4% state Sen. Brian Jones.

In the 2018 election, Campa-Najjar narrowly lost to Hunter, who is under indictment on federal charges of campaign finance fraud. Since then, two well-known Republicans who live outside the district, DeMaio and Issa, have launched campaigns in hopes of attracting Republicans dissatisfied with Hunter.

“I’m humbled by this show of early support, but we have a lot of work ahead. I pledge to take no voter for granted and earn your support,” tweeted Campa-Najjar after the poll results were made public.
