Brian Jones Succeeds in State Senate Bid; Incumbents Successful in Assembly Races

Incumbent members of the state Assembly cruised to victory Tuesday night, and Assembly member Bryan Jones was successful in his bid for the state Senate.

In the 38th Senate District, where Sen. Joel Anderson is termed out, Jones had 58.7 percent to Jeff Griffith’s 38.7 percent with 100 percent of precincts reporting but may bail ballot still not counted.

In the 40th Assembly District in South County, incumbent Ben Hueso, a Democrat, led with 59.0 percent to Republican challenger Luis Vargas’s 40.8 percent.

Randy Voepel, the former Santee Mayor and incumbent in the 71st Assembly District, led Democratic challenger James Elia by  45.5 percent to 31.2 percent. Larry Wilske, who had accused Voepel of inflating his service record, was a distant third.

In the 76th Assembly District in North County, community activist Elizabeth Warren at 25.6 percent and Encinitas City Council member Tash Boerner Horvath at 25.2 percent are apparently headed to a runoff, with Phil Graham, son of the former California governor, third at 21.1 percent.

Incumbent Brian Maienschein led with 58.4 percent to Sunday Gover’s 41.5 percent in the 77th Assembly District, which stretches from north San Diego to Rancho Santa Fe.

Todd Gloria held a commanding lead in the 78th District, with 69.6 percent of the vote to challenger Maggie Campbell’s 30.2 percent.

In the 79th District, Shirley Weber had a comfortable lead at 61.5 percent to challenger John Moore’s 38.4 percent.

Lorena Gonzalez cruised to victory with 68.2 percent to Lincoln Pickard’s 31.6 percent.
