San Diego Democrat Scott Peters received the official endorsement of President Obama Thursday in his bid for re-election to a third term in Congress in the 52nd District.

“I know Scott Peters and the people of his district could not have a better representative in the U.S. Congress fighting for their security, prosperity, and economic opportunity,” Obama said. “Scott Peters is the real deal — a thoughtful, independent, hard-working leader who delivers for San Diego.”

Peters, a former city councilman and port commissioner, said he was honored and grateful for the Presidential endorsement.

“President Obama and I have shared values and priorities for our country: a tough, smart national security strategy; access to affordable, quality college education; closing gun background check loopholes; building an economy that leaves no one behind; and equality for all,” said Peters.

Peters faces Republican Denise Gitsham, a public relations entrepreneur and lawyer who worked in the George Bush White House, in the November general election.

The 52nd Congressional District covers Coronado, La Jolla, much of northern San Diego, and Poway.
