San Diego Mayor Kevin Falconer announced that the city would install new sidewalks and streetlights in the City Heights, Colina Del Sol and College neighborhoods.

The City Council on Tuesday approved the mayor’s request for the $5.8 million project, which will include several miles of sidewalks and move than 100 new streetlights.

“This multi-million dollar investment means more San Diego neighborhoods will be safer at night and more pedestrian-friendly,” Faulconer said. “For the student walking home from school or the family going on an evening stroll, new sidewalks and streetlights can make all the difference.”

The two projects are:

  • Install sidewalks and 138 new streetlights in the neighborhoods of City Heights and Colina Del Sol
  • Repair and replacement of sidewalks along El Cajon Boulevard between 54th and 73rd streets

The projects had been on hold for several years because of the state’s decision to dissolve redevelopment agencies in 2012.
