Life rarely follows a straight path. Sometimes, the most meaningful journeys begin when we least expect them — with a single decision, a moment of courage or a fresh start. For both of us, that moment led to MiraCosta College — a choice that changed everything

Community colleges are often treated as a fallback instead of what they truly are: a solution. They meet students where they are, whether fresh out of high school, returning after years away or rebuilding from scratch. These institutions fill the gaps in higher education, offering affordable, accessible pathways to well-paying careers and better lives.

We didn’t enroll at MiraCosta because of a New Year’s resolution, but our experiences there embodied that spirit in many ways. Like so many others, we enrolled while searching for direction. What we found wasn’t just an education but a community that believed in us, supported us, and helped us build brighter futures.

Taking the First Step

For Mark, the first step came almost by chance. Growing up in Oceanside as a first-generation college student, he thought athletics — not academics — was his way forward. After high school, he worked as a personal trainer without clear plans. But his girlfriend encouraged him to take a class at MiraCosta. That first class sparked a passion for justice and set him on a path to a law degree.

For Esther, taking the first step felt daunting. Raised in a family where women weren’t encouraged to pursue higher education, she thought she had forgone college years to get married and raise children. When her marriage ended, she faced the overwhelming task of starting over. Encouraged by her younger sister, she visited MiraCosta’s campus. That tour gave her a glimpse of hope — and the courage to try again.

Discovering Purpose

Community colleges do more than provide classes; they help students discover their purpose. Mark found his through the encouragement of professors and academic counselors who helped him see how his passion for social and political issues could translate into a law career.

For Esther, counselors and mentors helped her align her interests with her goals. A mentor connected her love of baking with biotechnology, noting their shared need for precision and process. That insight led her to MiraCosta’s biomanufacturing bachelor’s program.

Overcoming Challenges

Every new beginning comes with challenges; community colleges are uniquely equipped to help students succeed. Mark balanced part-time work with classes and took advantage of programs — such as the UC Berkeley Transfer Alliance Project — that gave him the confidence to transfer to Cal after earning his associate degree.

Esther faced hurdles, juggling four on-campus jobs while raising her children as a single parent. She overcame her fear of math through MiraCosta’s Bridges program, and an internship in stem cell research at Thermo Fisher proved that she could excel in a science career.

Achieving Resolutions

Today, Mark is a senior associate attorney at Clarkson Law Firm P.C., specializing in complex public interest lawsuits, and serves on the MiraCosta Foundation Board to help expand educational access. Esther works in the biotech sector as a senior quality assurance specialist. She recently bought a house, a feat she couldn’t have imagined possible just a few short years ago.

But our stories aren’t just about what we achieved — they’re about how community college changed the course of our lives. These schools are the unsung heroes of higher education, providing affordable access, tailored support and pathways to success for people at every stage of life.

And yet, they remain undervalued. In a time when student debt looms large and workforce demands are shifting, community colleges are the solution hiding in plain sight.

As you think about what’s next for you or someone you know, consider how a community college could make all the difference. Whether you’re looking for a fresh start, pursuing a passion, or overcoming obstacles, community colleges offer the flexibility and support to meet you where you are.

Mark’s journey began with a sociology class. Esther’s started with a campus tour. Your path can begin with something just as simple.

Take that first step. It could be the start of a journey that transforms your life — just like it did for us.
