The pilot of a Yuma-stationed military jet attached to the Miramar-based Third Marine Aircraft Wing was able to safely eject Wednesday afternoon before the aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood in the town of Imperial.

It was not immediately clear if anyone on the ground was injured when the AV-8B Harrier went down shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to Marine Corps officials.

The fiery crash damaged civilian homes, said Maj. Carl Redding Jr., spokesman for the air wing.

Medics took the pilot to a hospital for a precautionary evaluation.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, Redding said.
