Father Joe’s Villages opened the 407-unit Saint Teresa of Calcutta Villa on Thursday, an affordable housing community for previously homeless individuals and families.
“Hundreds of people are gaining a new place to call home and a space of their own where they’ll feel safe and supported in a community that will restore dignity and hope,” said Deacon Jim Vargas, president and CEO of the homeless services provider.
Vargas was joined by Mayor Todd Gloria in cutting a ribbon for the new building on 14th Street in downtown San Diego’s East Village.
“Bringing more than 400 individuals and families in from off the streets is a monumental step in the right direction and a genuine commitment to the principles of housing first,” said Gloria.
Developed by Father Joe’s in partnership with Chelsea Investment Corporation, the new 14-story tower is intended to serve veterans, seniors, people with disabilities and families. Rental housing vouchers from the San Diego Housing Commission will help pay rent for 270 households that have experienced homelessness.
The new building features a community courtyard with gardens, a play area for children, a dog run, a fitness room and on-site services for residents facing challenges. A promenade at the entrance to the new building honors the memory of Father Joe Carroll.
Father Joe’s Villages, which is San Diego’s largest provider of services to the homeless, has a goal of creating 2,000 units of affordable housing in San Diego to significantly reduce homelessness in the city.
