San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer got an earful Friday afternoon, but it wasn’t from angry citizenry. It was from kindergarten children making toy requests during his annual Santa rendition.

Following a 14-year tradition, Santa Claus (Mayor Kevin Faulconer) paid a visit to his sister’s Burbank Elementary School kindergarten class in Logan Heights to deliver books.

Santa gave the children the message of the importance of reading and obeying their parents and teachers.

The children sang three Christmas songs for Santa Mayor and were given several books in anticipation of their holiday vacation that starts Saturday.

Santa also was quizzed by the kids: Do you speak Spanish? And could they see his reindeer?

His replies: For reindeer, they’d have to wait till Christmas. And then he spoke several phrases en español.

As he was leaving, the children hugged him and shouted out all of the toys they want for Christmas. With the help of the children’s names printed on their paper hats, Santa Faulconer was able to call all children by their names.

Faulconer spoke afterward about his visit.

“It’s a chance to say hello,” he said, “and (tell them) how I’m excited I am that Christmas is coming, give them a few books so they can be reading over the winter break and remind them to listen to their parents.”
