More than 150 adoption applications were received by the Rancho Coastal Humane Society on Monday from people hoping to take home one of 35 beagle puppies that were handed over by an overwhelmed woman.
The woman gave the beagles and five pugs to Four Paws Coonhound Rescue and Friends of Blossom Valley — east of El Cajon, and the rescue group contacted the Humane Society for help.
The bevy of beagles includes adults, pregnant females and puppies, said John Van Zante of the Humane Society.
He said he’s hoping some of the adults will go home by the end of this week.
“While the beagles are what bring in people, we’ve already seen people coming in to meet the beagles — then changing their minds and asking to meet other dogs,” Van Zante said. “We’ve had people who came in to meet puppies, then realized that puppies are a lot more work then they want.”
He said the puppies will become available for adoption when they’re 8 weeks old and have been spayed or neutered.
One of the pregnant dogs is expected to have her puppies in seven weeks, so RCHS and Four Paws will probably have beagle puppies available for adoption until early June, he said.
