Two San Diego State University students took home a top prize at the recent Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Golden Microphone Awards.

Matthew Hoffman, a freshman television, film and media major, and Anthony Reclusado, a freshman journalism major, outpaced students at a number of universities across the U.S. for their broadcast of a SDSU hockey game in the best “Play by Play” category.

The two freshman decided to join KCR College Radio, SDSU’s student-run radio station, when they moved into the dorms in August. The two aimed to network and gain insight into the radio industry and were intrigued by the intricacies of running a radio station.

“When I started, I didn’t know anything about hockey,” Reclusado said. “But KCR had an opening to broadcast SDSU hockey games, so we decided to get involved.”

Their award-winning broadcast was of a game against Northern Arizona University.

“They have great initiative and work really well together,” said Matthew Bain, a journalism major and sports director for KCR. “Their broadcasts are always entertaining and they’re great assets to KCR.”

Intercollegiate Broadcasting System honors excellence in programming, air personalities, public service efforts and outstanding stations with the Golden Microphone Awards.

SDSU’s radio station broadcasts live online. All shows are hosted by current SDSU students and occasionally alumni. The station covers music, news and sport and has been on air since 1969. The station broadcasts live on local digital cable channels, online and on the TuneIn radio app.
