Police on Thursday identified a man believed to have shot and killed a woman in Oak Park, before turning the gun on himself.

The victim has been identified as Michelle Booker-Stewart, 51. Police identified the man at the residence as her husband, Nathaniel Stewart, 57.

“The incident appears to be a murder/suicide,” said the San Diego Police Department in a release. “There is no known threat to the community.”

On Saturday, San Diego Fire-Rescue paramedics tried to render aid to the victim, who had been shot in the torso. However, she died at the scene.

Police said that Stewart was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

SDPD homicide detectives are handling the investigation.

The San Diego Black Nurses Association, on their Facebook page, called Booker-Stewart ” a sister in spirit—a compassionate soul whose life was a testament to care, courage and community.”

In a reply, a woman said it had been an “absolute privilege to have Michelle as my manager at Kaiser!”

Booker-Stewart also is featured on the association’s website. The organization awarded her a scholarship in 2017; she is shown with two other women, smiling, wearing pearls and holding flowers.

Members of the San Diego chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses also recalled Booker-Stewart in a social media post, saying that “Michelle dedicated her life to helping others—may her memory continue to inspire strength, compassion, and justice.”
