Deputies from the Poway Sheriff’s Station arrested two drivers suspected of DUI at a Poway Road checkpoint, while issuing multiple citations, officials said.

Nearly 500 vehicles passed through Friday’s checkpoint, in the 12700 block of Poway Road – 31 were sent to secondary evaluation, with seven motorists examined further for possible DUIs, according to a Sheriff’s news release.

The citations went to six drivers for allegedly operating a vehicle while unlicensed or with a suspended or revoked license, seven drivers for allegedly not having a driver’s license in their possession and one for an alleged traffic signal violation.

No vehicles were towed and no drug arrests were made.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
