The San Diego Sheriff’s Office announced plans for a DUI and license checkpoint somewhere within the city limits of Poway on Friday night.
Deputies will be stopping vehicles from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday to check for alcohol, marijuana or drug impairment as well as proper licensing.
Checkpoints are regularly announced in advance because of the deterrent effect on people who might drink or smoke to excess and then get behind the wheel. Locations are chosen based on collision and arrest statistics.
The sheriff’s office warned that “DUI doesn’t just mean booze,” noting that some prescription drugs can result in impairment.
Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the impact of an arrest to cost upwards of $13,500. This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses.
