A man who pleaded guilty to the fatal shooting of a woman in Lincoln Park was sentenced Monday to six years in state prison.

Alex Galvan, 24, was sentenced Monday for the May 14, 2022, killing of 31-year-old Sengny Chea, who was shot multiple times near an apartment complex on South Willie James Jones Avenue. Chea’s 12-year-old son was also injured in the shooting.

The shooting was reported at 2:19 a.m., according to San Diego Police, who said gunfire broke out after Galvan and at least one other man became involved in a physical altercation with the 12-year-old’s father as Chea and her son “came upon Galvan and his companions in the parking area behind their apartment complex.”

Chea died at the scene, while her son was hospitalized for a gunshot wound to one of his legs. Galvan, who was arrested shortly after the shooting, was also hospitalized for a gunshot wound to his wrist.

At the conclusion of a trial held earlier this year, a San Diego jury acquitted Galvan of first-degree murder and hung on second-degree murder. Galvan later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
