The male driver of a large truck lost control and overturned Saturday morning, dumping a load of trash along an Interstate 15 transition road.

The driver, apparently bound for the Sycamore Landfill near Santee, was taking the southbound I-15 transition to eastbound state Route 52 when he lost control of the tractor-trailer around 8 a.m., according to OnScene.TV.

The vehicle flipped onto its side, damaging a guard rail, and blocked the ramp, but the driver was able to escape. Medics sent him to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Fluids were flowing into the storm drain, and a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department hazardous materials team was summoned, along with another hazmat team from San Diego County. Caltrans also responded.

The spilled trash was set to be collected once the truck was upright. The California Highway Patrol told OnScene that investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash, causing the truck’s load to shift when the driver made the turn on the ramp.

The transition was expected to be closed for several hours.
