Just after 3 a.m. Saturday, police received a call about a man down on the sidewalk along a bike path in Teralta Park at 4050 Orange Ave., said Lt. Steve Shebloski of the San Diego Police Department.

Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a man found slain last weekend in the Teralta West area.

Patrol personnel responding to a report of a possible medical emergency shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday found Virgil Heard, 31, lying mortally wounded alongside a bicycle path at Teralta Park, 4050 Orange Ave., according to the San Diego Police Department.

Heard died at the scene, despite lifesaving efforts on the part of the officers and paramedics. His death has been ruled a homicide, though police have not disclosed the nature of the fatal injuries he suffered.

Detectives have no description of Heard’s killer or killers, and “little is known about the circumstances leading up to (his) death,” SDPD Lt. Steve Shebloski said.
