Officers responding to a reported shooting at an East Village apartment building Thursday found two people dead, and an arrest followed a short time later.

The patrol personnel made the discovery at a residence in a high-rise complex in the 1400 block of Island Avenue at about 3:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

About 15 minutes later, officers stopped a northbound vehicle near Interstate 805 in the Gateway district, west of Manzanita Canyon. They arrested a male suspect without incident, Officer Darius Jamsetjee said.

Officers sought aid for a young girl who had been riding in the suspect’s vehicle. She was placed in protective custody.

The victims’ identities were not immediately available, nor the suspect’s. The child’s relationship to the man, if any, was unclear.

Officers called in homicide detectives to investigate the deaths, Jamsetjee said.
