San Diego County sheriff’s deputies asked the public for help locating a man who tried to convince two Santee juveniles to get into his minivan Saturday.

The unsolicited contact happened about 4:25 p.m. in front of a residence on Stoney Creek Court, according to sheriff’s officials.

The man drove up to the juveniles while they were playing in front of the residence and told them he was giving away free books, Stein said. He told them to go inside the back of the van and grab them.

The juveniles went into their residence and told their parents about the interaction with the man, officials said.

The parents called the sheriff’s department but deputies were unable to locate the suspect, officials said.

The suspect was described as an Asian man in his 50s with a thin build, gray hair, wearing a blue hat and yellow construction-site vest. He drove a gray, late ’80s or early ’90s minivan with a dark charcoal stripe.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Sgt. Jason Stein at the Santee Sheriff’s Station at 619-965-4000.
