An Amtrak train struck and killed a man who did not move out of the path of the oncoming locomotive near a Carlsbad station, authorities reported Tuesday morning.

The fatality occurred about 2:30 p.m. Monday on the railroad tracks near Grand Avenue and Washington Street, close to the Carlsbad Village Train Station, according to San Diego Sheriff‘s officials.

“A southbound Amtrak train was traveling at about 80-90 miles per hour when the engineer observed a white male adult walk onto the railroad tracks,” according to Deputy Monica Ramirez.

“The male stood on the tracks and faced the train while the engineer sounded the warning horn. The male did not move off of the tracks and was struck by the train. ”

The victim, whose name and age were not immediately available, died at the scene, Ramirez said.

Northbound and southbound Coaster train runs were suspended in the area due to the death, the North County Transit District announced. Bus service was offered to affected riders.
