A pedestrian standing on the tracks was struck by an Amtrak train and killed Thursday afternoon in Oceanside.

The pedestrian was struck about 3:50 p.m. by northbound train A583 in the grade crossing at Wisconsin Avenue, according to San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Tyler Elkermann.

“The pedestrian was standing in the middle of the intersection even though the grade crossing warning devices were activated,” Elkermann said.

“As the train approached the intersection, the engineer observed the pedestrian in the middle of the intersection. The engineer sounded his horn multiple times warning the pedestrian of the oncoming train. The pedestrian made no attempt to walk away from the tracks.”

The engineer activated the train’s emergency braking system, but was unable to come to a stop, Elkermann said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

No information was immediately available about the person’s age or gender.
