An Amtrak train struck and killed a woman walking away from it Tuesday on a stretch of tracks near Buccaneer Beach in Oceanside.
The fatality on the tracks near Cassidy Street and Coast Highway 101 occurred just before noon, said Jason Burk of the Sheriff’s Department Transit Enforcement Unit.
Burk said the southbound train was going 65-70 miles an hour when the engineer observed a white woman between the ages of 40 and 50, walking southbound along the railroad ties just outside of the railroad track.
“The train sounded its horn and went into emergency braking, but unfortunately fatally struck the female,” Burk said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
