A 79-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck by a car in Bankers Hill, police reported Wednesday.

The accident happened shortly before 3:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue, just north of Interstate 5, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.

A 74-year-old man was driving a Ford sedan westbound on Elm Street and made a turn onto southbound Fourth Avenue when he struck a 79-year-old man who was crossing Fourth Avenue westbound in an unmarked crosswalk, Buttle said.

The victim suffered an open fracture to his right ankle and abrasions to his knees and elbow, Buttle said.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment of the injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Buttle said.
