A senior citizen seriously injured in a van crash on state Route 54 has died, according to a broadcast report.
The family of 87-year-old Tomas Medina made the announcement, NBC7 said.
Late Friday evening Medina was removed from life support after doctors informed his family that he was too fragile to undergo surgery, according to NBC7.
Medina was one of five people, including the driver, injured Friday morning when a medical transport van veered out of control and overturned on state Route 54 in the community of Paradise Hills.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m. the westbound vehicle, which had about eight people aboard, careened off the freeway near South Woodman Street, crashed over a guardrail and came to rest on the driver’s side in a center median, the California Highway Patrol said.
The van’s driver was headed to St. Paul’s PACE Center in Chula Vista, according to NBC7.
While three other senior citizens in the van suffered minor injuries and were treated at Scripps Mercy Hospital, Medina suffered a concussion along with a severe cut to one of his legs and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, NBC7 said.
