The San Diego Police Department warned drivers to expect a DUI checkpoint somewhere within the city limits of San Diego on Friday night.

Officers will be stopping drivers briefly to check for drunk or drugged conditions and proper licensing between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.

The location will be chosen based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests.

“The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes,” the department said in a statement.

Over 10,000 people are killed by impaired drivers annually in the United States.

Impaired drivers caught at checkpoints can expect jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
