Authorities have released the name of a 22-year-old man who was mortally wounded last weekend in an apparently random shooting alongside state Route 94 in the Webster area.

Gabriel Gutierrez of San Diego was riding in a white Toyota Camry whose driver — his brother — pulled over for unknown reasons next to the westbound lanes of the freeway near an on-ramp from the 4800 block of A Street at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, police said Wednesday.

Gutierrez and a second male passenger got out of the car and were soon approached by a pair of men in dark clothing. An argument broke out, during which one of the two pedestrians opened fire with a pistol, wounding Gutierrez in the chest, said Lt. Ray Valentin.

Medics took Gutierrez to a hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds three days later.

Detectives do not think the victim or his companions had been in any sort of prior contact with the shooter or his cohort, both of whom remain unidentified.

“We do believe it was random,” said the lieutenant.

The victim’s brother and friend have not told police why they pulled over alongside the freeway, according to Valentin.
