A cognitively challenged woman who went missing in University City and remained at large for more than 24 hours turned up safe Wednesday in the same general area.
An employee of an apartment complex in the 5200 block of Genesee Cove spotted Maria Mireles, 62, shortly before 10:30 a.m. and recognized her from a news report on her disappearance, according to San Diego police.
Mireles, who suffers from dementia, appeared confused but unharmed, SDPD public-affairs Officer Mark Herring said.
It was unclear where she had been since being reported missing in the area of Costa Verde Center mall about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
