A parolee suspected of trying to burglarize a coastal North County motel Monday fled into another nearby lodge, where he pulled a knife on two employees and held them hostage until Carlsbad Police arrested him following a brief standoff.

Abraham Ledesma Gomez, 29, ran off from the Carlsbad Inn, 3075 Carlsbad Blvd., as patrol officers arrived about 8:30 a.m. to investigate the possible burglary attempt, Lt. Mickey Williams said.

The suspect entered the lobby of the nearby Best Western Plus Beach View Lodge, where he allegedly confronted a pair of staffers. He then allegedly brandished a steak knife, ordered them into a rear office and threatened to kill them if they made any noise, according to Williams.

Officers surrounded the inn, and a short time later Gomez returned to the lobby, where the patrol personnel approached him with guns drawn, the lieutenant said. The suspect, who was unarmed at that point, yelled at them to shoot him, then fought with them as they took him into custody, Williams said.

No injuries were reported.

Gomez, a San Diego resident, was expected to be booked into county jail on suspicion of kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and parole violation, according to police.
