Witnesses to an attempted robbery that left a 19-year-old woman with minor injuries at San Diego City College on Thursday grabbed the perpetrator and held him for police, authorities said.

The thief confronted the victim and shoved her against a wall outside a campus math/social sciences building near the corner of 16th and C streets shortly before 11 a.m., San Diego Community College District spokesman Jack Beresford said.

Several other students intervened by tackling the 54-year-old suspected assailant.

Campus police took custody of the man, whose name was not immediately available.

Medics took the victim to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.

Preliminary reports that the suspect stabbed the victim with a screwdriver proved unfounded, Beresford said.
