Crews are working to extinguish a brush fire that erupted late in the afternoon Tuesday off Carlton Oaks Drive, near Calle del Verde in Santee, a dispatcher says.

There are no reports of structural threats.

San Diego is currently dealing with dry, hot weather and gusty winds that are expected to continue through Thursday, all three of which are dangerous conditions for fire hazards.

Wind-whipped flames cut through dense foliage in the area near Carlton Oaks Country Club, blackening about five acres and threatening some homes, but causing no reported structural damage.

The blaze erupted about 3 p.m. in the bed of the San Diego River off Carlton Oaks Drive, according to Heartland Fire & Rescue.

Ground crews and personnel aboard several water-dropping helicopters attacked the fire, a dispatcher said.

Within two hours, firefighters were making good progress toward containing the smoldering burn area. How the fire started was not immediately known.
