Walking with headphones and focusing on a handheld device instead of where he was going may have caused the death Saturday of a 24-year-old man who was struck by a northbound Amtrak train in San Diego.

The accident occurred at 3 p.m. at the railroad crossing at 2136 W. Washington St., near the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, said San Diego Sheriff’s Deputy Jeffrey Houser.

“A 24-year-old male was struck by a northbound Amtrak train while crossing the railroad tracks,” Houser said. “Witnesses stated that the victim may have been wearing headphones and manipulating a handheld device. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The accident was under investigation by the sheriff’s Coaster and Railroad Enforcement Unit, he said. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the sheriff’s non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
