In a bi-national show of support for the region’s economic development, the mayors of San Diego and Tijuana on Thursday toured two American-owned factories producing medical equipment in Mexico.
Mayors Kevin Faulconer and Jorge Astiazarán visited Welch Allyn, a maker of diagnostic equipment, and Medtronic, which makes insulin pumps and other medical devices. Together the two factories employ nearly 5,000 people.
The tour comes in advance of the upcoming Med Tech conference in early October that will bring hundreds of medical technology firms to San Diego. The conference is sponsored by the AdvaMed trade organization, which represents 80 percent of medical technology firms in the United States.
Many medical device companies have research and development operations in San Diego and manufacturing facilities just a few dozen miles away in Tijuana.
