Cox Communications announced Wednesday it is launching gigabit Internet service — fast enough to download an HD movie in 60 seconds — for residential customers in San Diego.
The new service from Cox will offer speeds 100 times faster than the average Internet speed in most parts of the United States. It will be initially available in new developments downtown, in Escondido and elsewhere in north San Diego County
“Cox is the first provider in San Diego County to offer gigabit speeds to residential customers,” said Dave Bialis, senior vice president and region manager for Cox Communications’ California operations. “We’re excited to once again be on the forefront of bringing the latest technology to our customers, and we’ll continue investing in our network and our community.”
Cox has offered gigabit speed to businesses for more than a decade, and has committed to offering the same speed to residences in all of its markets by the end of 2016. The company has already launched the service in parts of Irvine, Phoenix, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Omaha.
Cox is the third-largest U.S. cable TV company, serving 6 million residences and businesses.
